Did you ever get pocket money when you were young?

Yes, I used to. Because I usually had friends from a poor background, I would share my pocket money with them.

When did you first open a bank account, where was it?

It was in 2009, I opened it at Standard Bank.

What lessons do you remember about money from your childhood?

I learnt that money can make you go wild. I learnt that your family’s needs should take priority if you have money and that you should respect it.

How much was your first pay?

I was on an industrial show at the Playhouse. I was making R1 700 after deductions a week.

What did you do with your first pay?

When I started working we had a faulty refrigerator at home, so I bought them a new one. My dad was sickly and his bed was not in a good condition, so I bought Mom and Dad a new bed.

What’s the worst mistake you’ve done with money?

I very nearly forgot the lessons from home; that the first thing to do when you have money is to look after your family.

Have you ever been involved in a pyramid scheme?

No, I have never been scammed. However, I came close to joining MMM, but I was lucky not to.

How would you spend R1 million from lottery winnings?

I would use it to build an arts centre. The arts centre would help the local kids keep away from drugs and crime, then I would donate the rest to the needy.

What’s your money advice to people in your industry?

As artists, we often go through dry spells, when gigs dry up. Although we often get paid, sometimes i’ts possible to go without pay for three months. I would advise artists to have a savings accounts for savings and investments for rainy days to tap into during dry seasons.
